Medicolegal Issues is a one-day introductory course that provides an insight into Medical Law, Consent, Capacity, Child & Young People and Negligence, and the impact that Medicolegal issues can have on healthcare organisations.

Course objectives

This course will:

  • Provide an overview of the process by which a complaint gets to court as well as the human and financial impact of litigation on the NHS

  • Introduce the five key principles of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and how to manage decision making for a patient that lacks capacity

  • Explore what constitutes informed consent and who can give it

  • Discuss the principles of parental responsibility and how consent law differs for children and young people

  • Examine the three-part test for clinical negligence and what constitutes gross negligence
